The Secretary for Education (SED), Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (December 17) concluded his duty visit to Indonesia.

This morning, Mr Ng called on the Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture, Professor Dr Ir Mohammed Nuh, to exchange views on education policies and co-operation.

He shared Hong Kong's experience and achievements in its education reform since 2000 and the smooth implementation of the New Academic Structure in the past few years.

Mr Ng also introduced the progress of Hong Kong in its aspiration to be a regional education hub through internationalisation and diversification of its higher education sector. In 2012-13, a total of 26,600 non-local students from over 70 countries or regions were pursuing post-secondary studies in Hong Kong.

Both Mr Ng and Professor Dr Ir Mohammed Nuh agreed that Hong Kong and Indonesia should continue to strengthen educational ties with each other in various aspects, such as further studies, research, teacher training and student exchange activities.

After exchanging views with Professor Dr Ir Mohammed Nuh, Mr Ng was pleased to learn that the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture planned to send a delegation to Hong Kong next year with a view to further enhancing bilateral co-operation and exchanges.

In the afternoon, Mr Ng visited the Regional Centre for Quality Improvement of Teachers and Education Personnel in Language under the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization to find out more about the recent developments of teacher training in the region.

Tonight he will join a dinner reception hosted by the Po Leung Kuk for some 100 teachers and students of its secondary schools visiting Jakarta as part of their cross-country study tour, and will listen to their feedback and hear about their learning outcomes.

Officials accompanying Mr Ng to visit Indonesia include the Administrative Assistant to the SED, Mr Kenneth Cheng, and the Chief Curriculum Development Officer (Personal, Social and Humanities Education), Mr Lee Chi-hung. They will leave Jakarta tonight and arrive in Hong Kong tomorrow morning (December 18).
