The three-day Distinguished Chinese Scientists Lecture Series 2013, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), the China Association for Science and Technology, the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre and the China Association (HK) for Science and Society Ltd, began today (November 28) at the Hong Kong Science Museum.
Officiating at the opening ceremony were the Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui; the Deputy Director (Culture) of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Cynthia Liu; the Executive Vice President of the China Association for Science and Technology, Mr Shen Weichen; the Deputy Director General of the Education, Science and Technology Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Mr Mo Jinqiang; the Director-General of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences, Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China in the HKSAR, Mr Chen Haiping; the Deputy Secretary-General of the China Association (HK) for Science and Society Ltd, Professor Tso Wung-wai; and the President of the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre, Mr Li Nai-yiu.
Also officiating were the Head of the Department of Surgery at the University of Hong Kong, Chief of Service of the Department of Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital and Chief of Service of the Department of Surgery at the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital, Professor Lo Chung-mau; Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, Professor Wang Longde; Professor of the College of Computer at the National University of Defense Technology and Deputy Chief Designer of the Tianhe Supercomputer System, Professor Hu Qingfeng; Deputy Dean of the College of Computer at the National University of Defense Technology and Deputy Chief Designer of the Tianhe Supercomputer System, Professor Lu Kai; Academician of the Chinese Academy of Science and Director of the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Jiang Guibin; and Professor of the Department of Physics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Hui Pak-ming.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ms Hui noted that Chinese scientists have long played a significant role in fostering advanced scientific research and technology development, making remarkable achievements in various research areas, and have consequently gained wide recognition. The Distinguished Chinese Scientists Lecture Series is presented with the dual aims of enhancing public understanding on technology development and promoting popular science education. With the support and participation of scientists and experts, the organisers hope the public, and students in particular, will learn more about the achievements of Chinese scientists.
The Distinguished Chinese Scientists Lecture Series was first organised in 2003 by the LCSD in conjunction with the China Association for Science and Technology and the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre. Since then, renowned Chinese scientists have been invited to give lectures each year on a variety of topics.
The lecture series for this year will be held at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Science Museum from today till Saturday (November 30). The five lecture sessions will cover different topics of scientific research, including the development of liver transplantation, the prevention and control of diseases, the challenge of Exascale HPC development, environmental pollution and health, and how to succeed in scientific research. Professor Hui Pak-ming will serve as guest host.
Details of the lectures being held today are as follows:
First lecture: "The Development of Liver Transplantation in Hong Kong"

Admission tickets are required. However, a few quotas will be reserved for walk-in admission on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested parties may queue outside the lecture hall of the Hong Kong Science Museum before the lectures begin.
