Deyin Qin Society to hold guqin concert in December
***************************************************

The Deyin Qin Society, which aims to preserve guqin culture, will hold the first concert in the "Nan Lian Garden Music Series", entitled "The Charm of Qin", in December.

The guqin is the musical instrument of the literati, and its music is characterised by serenity and subtlety. Traditional and new pieces will be performed with antique instruments in the concert by locally renowned guqin players, including Sou Si-tai, Lau Chor-wah, Tse Chun-yan, Ng Ying-wai and Wong Chi-fong, as well as guest performers Cheung Lai-chun, Chan Chun-miu, Yu Mei-lai and Wu Yun-kan. With an array of guqin solos and poems from the Song and Yuan Dynasties, including "Water Immortal", "Mist and Cloud over Rivers Xiao and Xiang", "Wild Geese Landing on Smooth Sand", "Dialogue between the Fisherman and the Woodcutter" and "Hidden Fragrance", as well as the world premiere of "We Three", a commissioned composition by Tang Lok-yin, set to be performed in the concert, it is hoped that the audience can gain further insight into guqin culture.

The Deyin Qin Society was founded in 1998 by the disciples of Madam Tsar Teh-yun, a pre-eminent guqin master, with the aim of promoting the legacy of the music of Madam Tsar. Since its establishment, the society has been organising regular gatherings, music exchanges, exhibitions, publications and performances to promote the art of the guqin to the community.

"The Charm of Qin" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be staged at 8pm on December 17 (Tuesday) at the Theatre of Hong Kong City Hall. Tickets priced at $150 and $220 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the Nan Lian Garden Music Series and group booking packages. Please refer to the programme leaflet for discount details.

The Nan Lian Garden Music Series also includes "Guqin Recital by Wang Duo" (December 29), "Guqin Recital by Lau Chor-wah" (January 11, 2014), "Guqin Recital by Sou Si-tai" (January 18, 2014), "Guqin Recital by Tse Chun-yan" (January 19, 2014), "Guqin Recital by Cheng Gongliang and Dai Xiaolian" (February 8, 2014) and "Guqin Recital by Zeng Chengwei and Zeng He" (February 15, 2014).

To tie in with the production, four lecture-demonstrations on the guqin (to be conducted in Cantonese) will be held by the society. The lectures will take place at 7.30pm on December 18 and 28, 2013, and January 24 and 27, 2014, at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum.
