**********************************************

The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, visited Sham Shui Po District this afternoon (November 11) to familiarise himself with the latest developments in the district.

Dr Ko began by inspecting the district's primary health care facilities. He first went to the Shek Kip Mei General Out-patient Clinic to learn about the latest progress with the clinic's redevelopment plan. He then proceeded to the Caritas Medical Centre's Fu Cheong Community Nursing Centre, which endeavours to promote primary health care knowledge on a preventive basis and improve local residents' awareness of self-health management.

Chatting with patients and staff, Dr Ko learnt that the centre provides chronic disease patients and their families with ongoing health management and support services including medical check-ups, consultation, talks and training.

Accompanied by Sham Shui Po District Officer, Mr Benjamin Mok, Dr Ko inspected the environmental hygiene condition of some places in the district including Cheong San Lane, Nam Cheong Street and Tung Chau Street.

Dr Ko then visited the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association (YHA)'s Mei Ho House Youth Hostel, which opened in October this year, and was briefed by a YHA representative on the major revitalisation projects inside the hostel, including an exhibition hall showing scenes of daily life and living conditions among Hong Kong's resettlement blocks from the 1950s to 1970s.

Before ending his visit, Dr Ko met with Sham Shui Po District Councillors to listen to their concerns and suggestions on local medical and environmental hygiene issues. They also exchanged views on district matters under the purview of the Food and Health Bureau.
