Cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Kwong Wah Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) made the following announcement today (November 5):

     An 80-year-old patient in a female orthopaedics and traumatology ward and a 64-year-old patient in a male surgical ward were confirmed to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers on October 22 and 24 respectively. In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has screened patients who had contact with the index patients. Five more patients (three male and two female, aged 43 to 86) have been confirmed as VRE carriers, all without clinical symptoms. Among the seven patients, four are still hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation and are in a stable condition. The remaining three patients have been discharged.

     The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted in the wards:

1. Disinfection and cleansing have been enhanced; and
2. Stringent contact precautions have been applied, including dedicated use of clinical items for VRE carriers, enhanced hand hygiene.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation on the wards.
