More than 3 000 dog lovers were impressed by the skills of police dog handlers and the performance of police dogs today (November 3) at the Police Dog Trial 2013 co-organised by the Hong Kong Police Dog Unit and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong)(SPCA).
The trial was open for public viewing, aiming at raising some $260,000 for SPCA and Operation Santa Claus. About 1 000 members of underprivileged groups were offered free admission to the event.
Officiating at the kick-off ceremony, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mr Cheung Tak-keung, said the event provided an opportunity for the Force to demonstrate the competence of police dogs as well as to promote animal care among members of the public.
Competing police dog handlers honed their skills among themselves and demonstrated their close bond with their canine partners in obedience and man-work competitions.
Other programmes included drug detection and explosive search demonstration by police dogs, performances by pet dogs and games booths.
After various rounds of eye-opening competition, handler Cheng Lai-hang and Semmy won both the obedience competition and the man-work competition and clinched the Overall Championship title.
