Territory-wide campaign to promote pedestrian safety
****************************************************

Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign yesterday (October 29).  Through education, publicity and stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.

A total of 342 verbal warnings and 1263 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road safety regulations during the campaign conducted from October 23 to 29.

During the above period, Police issued 981 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 193 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, and 32 summonses for climbing over/through kerbside fence/central reservation on a carriageway.

Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams had distributed about 12500 publicity leaflets at 478 locations across the territory and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.

"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely. Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000", a Police spokesman said.
