Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Princess Margaret Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Princess Margaret Hospital made the following update today (October 30) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients who were confirmed as carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a surgical ward:

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed contact tracing and has confirmed two more male patients (aged 84 and 88) as carriers of VRE without clinical symptoms. One of them has been discharged while the other one has been transferred to the isolation ward for further monitoring and treatment in stable condition.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the health condition of other patients in the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
