Food and wine, innovation, dodgeball and senior sports offer a week of variety (with photos)

     Wines and cuisine from around the world will again lure thousands of visitors to the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival this week.

     Held in the spectacular setting of the New Central Harbourfront, the event reinforces the city's reputation as one of Asia's top dining destinations.

     From October 31 to November 3 about 300 booths managed by international wineries and gourmet food specialists will be set up in six themed zones for different tastes and preferences.

     The Country Pavilion will offer fine wines and delicacies from Europe; the A-Lister Zone will present award-winning wines; and the Discovery Zone will give wine enthusiasts the chance to sample new products and brands.

     There will also be the Everyday Wine Zone for visitors to stock up on popular brands. The Party Wine Zone will offer champagnes and cocktails for special occasions. The Riedel Grand Tasting Pavilion will offer premium wines.

     Another attraction is the Tasting Room, where people can enjoy wine-and-food pairings with master chefs, wine and food appreciation master classes and talks by industry experts.

     There will also be nightly entertainment featuring fantastic music, with jazz and singing performances taking place on the main stage.

     Organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the festival is a signature event supporting the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign under Vibrant Hong Kong. Admission is $30 at the door. Entry passes can be purchased in advance.

     The educational and fun InnoCarnival 2013, to be held at the Hong Kong Science Park from November 2 to 10, is another "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign signature event this week. It will be open, free of charge, from 10am to 7pm daily.

     The InnoCarnival offers a rich lineup of programmes and is the highlight of InnoTech Month 2013, organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission to promote a culture of innovation and technology in Hong Kong.

     Carnival activities take place under three main themes - Life Science, Green Technology and Robotic Engineering. Over 60 programme partners have set up booths to showcase their latest achievements in research and development and technology.

     In total there will be more than 700 activities ranging from workshops for different age groups and talks given by scholars and industry professionals to guided tours and science competitions.

     Visitors should not miss the Dinosaur House, the Electric Vehicle Showcase or the Chinese Herbal Garden. Online registrations are required for some programmes.

     The highlight programme is the "InnoShow", to be held on the afternoon of November 9, featuring innovations, creativity, technology, and crossover multimedia performances including dancing, a magic show and interactive games.

     The Dodgeball Association of Hong Kong, China, regularly organises competitions to build interest in the sport and to promote it in Hong Kong schools.

     This week's Hong Kong Dodgeball Championships cum International Invitation Tournament 2013 is the main event of the year.

     The tournament will adopt a mixed competition system of Single Robin and Elimination, and only one dodgeball will be used in a match. Each match will consist of two-halves, with five minutes game time each and a one-minute break in between.

     Sixty teams have signed up to compete in five events - Undergraduate, Senior Secondary, Junior Secondary, Primary School and Open.

     The tournament will be held at two venues in Yuen Long. The events at Yuen Long Merchants Association Primary School, at 244 Castle Road, will run from 10am to 5pm on November 2, and from 9.30am to 4.30pm on November 3.

     The events at the Yuen Long District Sports Association Jockey Club Complex, at 8 Yuen Long Tai Yuk Road, will run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on November 2, and from 9.30am to 4.30pm on November 3. Admission is free at both venues.

     The champions of the five categories will represent Hong Kong at the Dodgeball Asia Cup, to be held in Tokyo from December 13 to 15.

     To encourage the elderly to become involved in sports, Pok Oi Hospital will hold the Active Ageing Sport Day 2013 at Tin Shui Wai Sports Centre on the afternoon of October 31.

     About 120 seniors from four elderly homes - the Jockey Club Care and Attention Home, Tai Kwan Care and Attention Home, Yeung Chun Pui Care and Attention Home, and Chan Feng Men Ling Care and Attention Home - will compete in specially designed sports activities.

     The event will start with a pledging ceremony to drum up the winning spirit. The seniors will then compete in five contests - javelin, football skills, a wheelchair race, mixed relay and cheerleading.

     Volunteers from the Police, women's associations and colleges will team up with the seniors in the mixed relay as well as competing in bean bag tossing, hula hoop, three-legged races and wheelchair races.

     Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each contest. The competing cheerleading teams will have the chance to win the Most Creative Award, Most Stylish Award, Best Wardrobe Award and the Cooperation Award.

     The Overall Best Performance Award will be presented to the home whose members have accumulated the highest score during the event.

     At 3pm on November 3, more than 200 children aged 3 to 12 will turn into "Dancing Beans" and perform "Danz to-gather!" at The Square, Citygate Outlets mall, Tung Chung.

     The event, titled Dancing Beans Energizing Outlying Islands, is organised by the Hong Kong Islands Cultural and Art Association and co-organised by the Festival Celebration Organising Committee (Tung Chung) and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

     Dancing Beans is a territory-wide event organised as part of the Hong Kong Dance Festival 2013.

     When the Tung Chung children start dancing at 3pm, children in Hong Kong's 17 other districts will start dancing at the same time. The event is aimed at encouraging children to participate in dance performances.

     Before and after the dance, parents and children can take up challenges together in the game booths from 1pm to 5pm in The Square.

     All these events support the "Hong Kong: Our Home" public participation campaign, which aims to inject positive energy into society, foster social cohesion and promote care, mutual help and solidarity in the community.

     More than 230 Partner Organisations have so far pledged support for the Campaign.

     Altogether, the Government and Partner Organisations are organising more than 1,000 events/activities under the four themes of the Campaign from the end of April to the end of December this year.
