The following is issued on behalf of the Committee on Free Kindergarten Education:

About 600 parents today (October 26) attended the Parent Seminar on Kindergarten Education under the theme "Investing Early and Wisely". The event was hosted by the Committee on Free Kindergarten Education, with support from the Education Bureau and the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong.

The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim; the Chairperson of the Committee on Free Kindergarten Education, Dr Moses Cheng; and the Dean of the Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Stephen Andrews, officiated at the opening ceremony of the seminar.

Five experts in early childhood education from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Singapore and Korea shared with participants their valuable insights and experiences on kindergarten education from different perspectives.

Topics discussed in the seminar included "Selecting a Kindergarten: What every parent should expect from a high quality pre-school education", "Should I send my child to a half-day or full-day programme?", "How can I support my child's learning at home?", "When and how should we introduce a second and third language to a young child?" and "Can children really learn through play?".

Set up by the Education Bureau in April this year, the Committee on Free Kindergarten Education will make concrete recommendations to the bureau on the practicable implementation of free kindergarten education in the context of 15-year free education.
