Political Assistant appointed

     The Chief Executive's Office announced today (October 25) that the Appointment Committee has appointed a Political Assistant of the fourth term of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.

     The Secretary for Labour and Welfare has recommended Ms Jade Lai Wing-yu to be his Political Assistant and his recommendation has been approved by the Appointment Committee. Ms Lai will assume office on November 1.

     Following are the biographical notes on the new appointee:

     Aged 36, Ms Lai holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree (first-class honours) from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 2000 to pursue a Master of Philosophy degree in Sociology at Oxford University.

     Before joining the Government, Ms Lai served as Deputy Director of the Hong Kong United Foundation. She also served the Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre between 2008 and 2012, initially as a research manager and later as Director of Advocacy. Between 2003 and 2008, she was a lecturer at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education. During that period, she also co-hosted various radio phone-in programmes. Ms Lai is currently the Vice-chairman of the Renaissance Foundation, a governing council member of the Roundtable and a member of the 30S Group.
