Hospital Authority announces senior appointment (with photo)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority (HA) today (October 24) announced the appointment of Dr Derrick Au Kit-sing to succeed Dr Liu Hing-wing as the Director (Quality & Safety) of the Hospital Authority with effect from February 1, 2014.

     Dr Au is currently the HA Head of Human Resources. Prior to his current appointment, he was the Hospital Chief Executive of Kowloon Hospital and Hong Kong Eye Hospital during the period from January 2007 to June 2011. Dr Au is a physician by background and a specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine and Geriatric Medicine. He has served in public hospitals in Hong Kong since 1983.

     Dr Au has been instrumental in a number of human resources reforms at the HA Head Office in the past two years to improve the manpower situation and working conditions of healthcare workers. Through engagement of stakeholders and open communication, a basket of measures were implemented to stabilise the clinical workforce, and a series of major reforms were implemented for the supporting staff. He has also supported the HA Chief Executive to set up a structured succession planning mechanism to identify and develop future leaders in the HA.

     Dr Au is a certified Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) hospital accreditation surveyor. As Co-chairman of the Committee on Standards, Dr Au led the development of the Hong Kong Version of the ACHS EQuIP 5 Standards currently used in the accreditation of hospitals territory-wide.

     Dr Au is currently Vice-chairman of the HA Clinical Ethics Committee and has long-standing involvement in the Clinical Ethics Committee and the Research Ethics Committee at hospital level.

     The HA Chairman, Mr Anthony Wu, and the HA Chief Executive, Dr Leung Pak-yin, congratulated Dr Au on his appointment and wished him every success in taking up the new challenge.

     The vacated post of the Head of Human Resources will later undergo a recruitment and appointment process.
