Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in United Christian Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for United Christian Hospital (UCH) made the following update today (October 23) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients who were confirmed as carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a geriatric ward:

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed contact tracing.  Six more male patients (aged 80 to 94) who had stayed in the same ward were confirmed to be VRE carriers without clinical symptoms. All of these patients are still hospitalised under surveillance and isolation with stable condition.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
