*******************************************************

A two-storey museum dedicated to the history of the Mei Ho House public housing block in Shek Kip Mei and early resettlement in Hong Kong will open its doors to the public on October 21.

The preservation of Mei Ho House is a project under the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme, and the opening of the Heritage of Mei Ho House museum is one of this week's highlight events of the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign under "Vibrant Hong Kong".

The museum is located in one of the first six-storey resettlement blocks built in 1954 to resettle squatters left homeless after the tragic Shek Kip Mei fire on December 25, 1953.

Four of the original units have been preserved for the museum, while public toilets and communal washrooms, as well as corridor cooking areas, have been reconstructed as part of the heritage protection efforts.

The museum will display 1,200 exhibits. More than 40 oral history records from former Mei Ho House residents will be showcased together with old photos and furniture.

The stories told by former Mei Ho House residents can be found at the website: www.meihohouse.hk/eng/lifeHall.php.¡@

In an effort to share collective memories, 166 Mei Ho House residents have come together to form the Mei Ho House Alumni Network. They will give guided tours to visitors and share their stories of what life was like in the neighbourhood.

The museum's opening hours will be from 9.30am to 5pm from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays. Admission is free.

About 1,500 runners are expected for the Eastern District Distance Running Competition 2013 on October 27.

The 4-kilometre race is being jointly held by the Eastern District Sports Association and the Task Group on Festival Celebrations of the Eastern District Council as a National Day celebration event for Eastern District.

The race is divided into three groups - Open Group for runners born in or before 1993, Youth Group for runners born between 1994 and 2000, and a Parent-and-Children Group without age restrictions to encourage family participation.

The Open Group will start at 7.30am. Runners will head along A Kung Ngam Road (near Tam Kung Temple) in Shau Kei Wan, through Aldrich Bay Promenade Park and along the promenade at Quarry Bay Park before turning back to finish at Aldrich Bay Promenade Park. Spectators are welcome.

Sixty booths will be set up at the Po Leung Kuk Flea Market at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza in Tsim Sha Tsui on October 27 - and on another six Sundays until mid-January 2014.

The flea market is being held for local handicraft artists and designers to showcase their talents and market their creative products. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department is the venue sponsor.

The booths sell mainly hand-made works made with paper, cloth, leather, ceramics and rope, as well as items made with wood and hand-painted wares. Visitors can take part in family activities such as making "cakes" with play dough.

The flea market provides an opportunity for the unemployed and low-income earners to run a start-up business. People earning $9,000 or less per month and interested in starting a business involving creative products can pay a daily registration fee of $10 to open a stall.

Apart from October 27, the market will also be held on November 3 and 17, December 15 and 22, and January 12 and 19, 2014.
