To promote local printmaking, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has collaborated with the Hong Kong Open Printshop to organise the "Collaborative Printmaking" partnership project, with eight local artists invited to participate.
As part of the initiative, an exhibition entitled "Collaborative Printmaking" will be held at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from tomorrow (October 20) to December 29. Visitors will be able to appreciate new works of print art, including 45 works created under the project.
The eight local artists, Cheung Chung-chu, Chow Chun-fai, Hung Keung, Jaffa Lam, Steven Lam, Pauline Lam, Victor Lai and Rosanna Li, who are known for their work in different media, brought together printmaking techniques and their art-making experience in respective fields to create innovative artworks that generate a new interpretation of print art.
The participating artists expressed their ideas in the project through working with professional printmakers to produce prints using woodblock, etching, lithography and screen-printing techniques. During the entire creative process, the artists worked closely with a printmaker, given the technical considerations, and through experimentation they explored the vocabulary and boundaries of image making.
To promote artistic exchanges between different cultures and geographical regions, works from the Centre for Fine Print Research of the University of the West of England and the Tamarind Institute of the University of New Mexico will also be showcased in the exhibition. Original works from these leading world-class print institutes will be exhibited in Asia for the first time. Created by a number of established and emerging artists, these works also display techniques ranging from expressive lithography to meticulous laser engravings.
The "Collaborative Printmaking" exhibition was officially opened today (October 19) by the Director of International Liaison and Academic Development of the University of the West of England, Ms Mian Ng; the Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Ms Belinda Wong; and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Open Printshop, Mr Fung Ho-yin.
The Curator (Art) of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Mr Cheng Woon-tong, who organised this project and the exhibition, noted that with the emergence of a relatively stable society in Hong Kong in the 1960s, printmaking began to take on local characteristics, diverging in types as well as in themes. On one hand, the works began to move towards the expression of personal ideas, and, on the other, they took on a richer and more varied outlook with the incorporation of East-West trends. By the 1990s, the advent of new technologies contributed to a new vista in printmaking, with the use of computer art, photocopying, transfer printing, digital technology and other processes, which further opened up possibilities for print art.
Mr Cheng said collaborative printmaking is well established in the West and it is hoped that, through the collaboration with the Hong Kong Open Printshop in organising this project and exhibition, the museum will be able to foster an understanding and appreciation of print art among visitors and make this exhibition a platform for sharing among people in the art circle.

The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is located at 1 Man Lam Road, Sha Tin. It is open from 10am to 6pm on weekdays, and from 10am to 7pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The museum is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays). Admission fee is $10 and half-price concessions are applicable to full-time students, people with disabilities and senior citizens aged 60 or above. The group admission fee is $7, applicable to every purchase of 20 tickets or more. Admission is free on Wednesdays.
