Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in United Christan Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for United Chrisitan Hospital (UCH) made the following update today (October 12) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients who were confirmed as carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a geriatrics ward:

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed contact tracing. Five more female patients (aged 77 to 91) were confirmed to be VRE carriers without clinical symptoms. Two of the patients are still hospitalised at UCH under medical surveillance and isolation with stable condition. The remaining three patients have been discharged.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
