Public urged not to buy or use oral product labelled as OxyELITE Pro (with photo)
********************************************************

The Department of Health (DH) today (October 9) appealed to members of the public not to buy or consume an oral product labelled as OxyELITE Pro, as it may have linked to some cases of acute non-viral hepatitis in Hawaii of the United States (US).

Through the DH's drug surveillance system, it is noted today that the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has advised consumers to stop using a dietary supplement product labelled as OxyELITE Pro which may have related to cases of acute non-viral hepatitis in Hawaii. Among the 29 cases reported so far, eleven cases have been hospitalised, two cases have received liver transplants and one person died. Twenty-four of the cases share a common link to OxyELITE Pro. According to the USFDA, the product is distributed by USPlabs LLC in the US. The joint investigation conducted by the US authorities continues. The USFDA is also investigating whether counterfeit product is related to any of the cases of acute hepatitis.

In Hong Kong, OxyELITE Pro is neither a registered pharmaceutical product nor registered proprietary Chinese medicine. The DH has contacted the USFDA for further information about the incident.

The DH has previously received a report concerning a female suffering from acute hepatitis symptoms after consuming an oral product labelled as OxyELITE Pro (photo as attached) in Hong Kong and the product remnant was found to contain an undeclared Western drug ingredient, yohimbine, which is a Part I poison used in the treatment of orthostatic hypotension. A press release was issued on June 5 accordingly.

A spokesman for the DH urged members of the public who have purchased the above product to stop using them immediately pending investigation by the US authorities. In addition, they are advised not to buy or consume products of unknown composition or from doubtful sources. People who are feeling unwell or in doubt after using the products should consult healthcare professionals.
