In the evening of October 12, people in Sha Tin will be able to witness the unusual sight of 1,200 green-nosed riders cycling along the Shing Mun River. The cyclists will all be taking part in the New Town Rider event to raise funds for the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society.

Adults and children, aged 7 to 65 and with basic cycling skills and road safety knowledge, will take part with organiser New Town Plaza providing bicycles and helmets.

The cyclists, who have registered already and will wear green noses as they ride, can choose between two routes.

The shorter route is 14 kilometres long, starting from Sha Tin Park and passing Hong Kong Science Park to finish at Tai Po Waterfront Park. Keen riders can take the same route and turn back to complete a journey of about 25km. Riders who complete either route will be awarded certificates.

In addition to raising money for charity, the event also aims to promote cycling as not only part of a healthy lifestyle, but also a form of environmentally friendly transport to reduce our carbon footprint. Event details are available at www.newtownrider.hk.
