SED to visit Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin

     The Secretary for Education (SED), Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, will depart from Hong Kong tomorrow (September 25) for educational exchanges in Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin.

     After arriving in Shanghai to commence his two-day visit to the city, Mr Ng will meet with representatives of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and call at the Teaching Research Office of the Commission for further exchanges. He will also visit Shanghai High School and Fudan University.

     In the evening of September 26, Mr Ng will arrive in Beijing, where he will lead the National Day Delegation from the Educational Sector of Hong Kong 2013 to participate in a variety of exchange activities and National Day celebrations.

     This is the eighth time the National Day Delegation from the Educational Sector of Hong Kong has been organised since 2006, with the aim to promote exchanges and co-operation between education workers of Hong Kong and Beijing for the benefit of learning and teaching as well as school curriculum development, and to enable Hong Kong education workers to see for themselves the latest developments of our country from multiple perspectives.

     This year, more than 100 Hong Kong education workers will join the delegation, including representatives of education organisations, advisory committees and tertiary institutions as well as teachers and principals of kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools.

     As in previous years, the delegation will visit a number of education institutions, including Tsinghua University as well as some kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools where the delegates will take part in class observation and exchanges with their counterparts in Beijing. They will visit the Binhai New Area, local enterprises and a cultural centre in Tianjin for better understanding of the country in the areas of history, culture, the economy and social construction.

     The delegation will also meet and have exchanges with Mainland officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Education, and participate in National Day celebrations.

     During his stay in Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin, Mr Ng will meet some students, businessmen and professionals from Hong Kong to look into the opportunities and challenges they face.

     Officials accompanying Mr Ng will include the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary for Education, Mr Kenneth Cheng, and the Principal Assistant Secretary (Quality Assurance and School-based Support), Mrs Hong Chan Tsui-wah. The delegation will return to Hong Kong on October 1.

     During Mr Ng's absence, the Under Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, will be the Acting SED.
