The Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, today (September 22) inspected a number of government departments and the MTR Corporation Limited (MTR) to learn more about the measures that have been put in place in response to Typhoon Usagi's threat.

Accompanied by the Acting Secretary for Security, Mr John Lee, Mr Leung conducted a site visit to Kar Wo Lei in Tuen Mun, one of the six low-lying areas that are vulnerable to sea flooding during typhoon. He also visited the Drainage Services Department's Emergency Control Centre in West Kowloon to inspect its operation.

To better understand the traffic and transport arrangements, Mr Leung visited the MTR's Operations Control Centre at Tsing Yi which is the command centre of the entire MTR heavy rail network. Mr Leung inspected the operation of the centre, how it oversees and coordinates the management of train services, executes the contingency plans as well as the power and environmental control of the railway network.

Mr Leung also visited the Emergency Transport Co-ordination Centre of the Transport Department. It is closely monitoring the weather and road conditions and has escalated its operation to a higher level for better co-ordination of the public transport and formulation of suitable transport contingency plan.

Mr Leung's last stop was the Emergency Monitoring and Support Centre (EMSC) activated by the Security Bureau. The EMSC was activated this afternoon to co-ordinate the resources and emergency response operations from various departments.

"We thank all the civil servant colleagues and staff members in other organisations for their dedications to their jobs under inclement weather conditions so that Hong Kong will continue to operate in a safe and orderly manner and the impact to the public will be minimised", Mr Leung said.
