The spokesperson for Caritas Medical Centre made the following update today (September 19) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients who were confirmed as carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in an orthopaedic ward:
In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed contact tracing and today confirmed five more male inpatients (aged 61 to 96) as VRE carriers without clinical symptoms. One of them had passed away due to his underlying illness, while the other four are under medical surveillance and isolation with stable condition.
The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
