Hong Kong Theatre Works will rerun British playwright Michael Frayn's "Copenhagen" in October.
"Copenhagen" is set during World War II and focuses on two awardees of the Nobel Prize in Physics - Werner Heisenberg, head physicist of Germany's nuclear reactor programme and famous for his "Uncertainty Principle", and Niels Bohr, Heisenberg's mentor, who is in danger in Nazi-occupied Denmark due to his Jewish background. Heisenberg's visit to Bohr in Copenhagen in 1941 leads to a fall out between the two and numerous speculations about the meeting. No one knows why they fell out. Was it, perhaps, related to the Nazis' losing out in the race to build the atomic bomb?
Hardy Tsoi, translator and director of "Copenhagen", thinks the human heart is as enigmatic as the unpredictable atom. "The interesting threshold in the plotline is the showdown of the three characters involved: Werner Heisenberg, Niels Bohr and Bohr's wife Margrethe. Their spirits meet after their deaths to attempt to unravel the intrigue and, possibly, the truth. But the play rises above the usual private-eye/thriller format with its probing into a wide variety of subjects - science, history, philosophy, and the liberal arts, all the time never losing the humanistic touch," says Tsoi.
"The original play dazzled the Western stage as the previous millennium came to a close, and the many awards and honours it has garnered from all over the world are a testimony to its artistic brilliance and cerebral sophistication," he added.
"Copenhagen" won a total of five awards at the 20th Hong Kong Drama Awards and the 3rd Hong Kong Theatre Libre when it was premiered. The cast for the rerun includes Mac Tu, Pak Yiu-charn and Brenda Chan.
"Copenhagen" is one of the programmes in the "Re-run Run Shows" series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be performed in Cantonese at 7.45pm on October 25 and 26 (Friday and Saturday) and at 2.45pm on October 27 (Sunday) at the Theatre of the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre. Tickets priced at $120 and $180 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the group booking package. Please note that there are audience seats to be located on the stage.
