********************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (September 16) the September 2013 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

Apart from providing up-to-date statistics, this issue also contains three feature articles entitled "Composite Employment Estimates 2012", "Updated Hong Kong Labour Force Projections for 2013 to 2041" and "Road Traffic Accident Statistics in Hong Kong, 2003 to 2012".  Statistics presented in the "Road Traffic Accident Statistics in Hong Kong, 2003 to 2012" article are based on the data source from the Transport Department.

"Composite Employment Estimates 2012"

In the study of employment statistics, there is a common issue arising from the discrepancies observed between the employment data obtained from establishment-based surveys which refer to occupied posts in firms, and those data obtained from household surveys which refer to persons employed.  In Hong Kong, this issue is tackled through the compilation of a set of Composite Employment Estimates (CEE) which reconcile, under a designated statistical framework, the results obtained from the household-based General Household Survey and the establishment-based Quarterly Survey of Employment and Vacancies.

This feature article provides the CEE figures for 2007 to 2012.  It also gives an account of the characteristics of CEE and briefly discusses the differences and usage of the CEE vis-à-vis the other employment figures.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Employment Statistics and Central Register of Establishments Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2582 4751).

"Updated Hong Kong Labour Force Projections for 2013 to 2041"

The C&SD has compiled an updated set of labour force projections covering the period 2013 to 2041.  This set of projections is compiled by making reference to the results of the 2011-based population and labour force projections as well as the latest trends of the age-sex specific labour force participation rates.  The updated projections provide information on the projected labour supply in Hong Kong and its age and sex distribution during 2013 to 2041.  This feature article gives a brief account of the projection method and presents the projection results.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the General Household Survey Section, C&SD (Tel.: 2887 5208).

"Road Traffic Accident Statistics in Hong Kong, 2003 to 2012"

Based on the road traffic accident data collected by the Hong Kong Police Force and maintained by the Transport Department, there were 15 894 road traffic accidents in Hong Kong in 2012, involving 20 210 casualties and 24 124 vehicles.  This feature article presents the trends of road traffic casualties and accidents in the past 10 years, and the characteristics of road users and vehicles involved.  It aims to give readers a better understanding about the recent road traffic accident situation in Hong Kong.

For enquiries about this feature article, please call the Statistics Section, Transport Department (Tel.: 2294 2559).

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population; labour; external trade; National Income and Balance of Payments; prices; business performance; energy; housing and property; Government accounts, finance and insurance; and transport, communications and tourism.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.  Users can download the Digest free of charge at the website of C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/hkstat/sub/sp140.jsp?productCode=B1010002).

Enquiries about the contents of the Digest can be directed to the General Statistics Section of C&SD (Tel.: 2582 4738).
