************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Princess Margaret Hospital made the following update today (September 14) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients who tested positive for Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a medical ward:

In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed contact tracing and has confirmed that four more male patients (aged 71 to 85) are carriers of VRE but without clinical symptoms. One of them has been discharged while the others have been transferred to the isolation ward for further monitoring and treatment. They are now under stable condition.

The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.
