Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Kowloon West Cluster

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Kowloon West Cluster made the following update today (September 13) regarding earlier announcements by Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Wong Tai Sin Hospital (WTSH) respectively on two clusters of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers:

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, PMH has performed contact tracing. Two more male patients (aged 62 and 75) of a medical ward were confirmed to be VRE carriers today but without clinical symptoms. The 62-year-old patient has been discharged while the other one has been transferred to the isolation ward for further monitoring and treatment in stable condition.

     Moreover, WTSH has also performed contact tracing. One more 31-year-old male patient in the Tuberculosis and Chest ward has been confirmed as a VRE carrier today but without clinical symptoms. The patient has been discharged.

     PMH and WTSH will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
