Hong Kong Customs seized from a speedpost parcel from São Paulo, Brazil, a total of 1 kilogramme of cocaine at Hong Kong International Airport on Monday (September 9). The drugs were concealed inside 100 packets of tea bags.
During the follow-up investigation, Customs officers arrested a man yesterday (September 10) and seized 13 grammes of herbal cannabis from him. The seized cocaine and herbal cannabis had an estimated value of $0.97 million.
The man, aged 29, claimed to be unemployed. He was charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and one count of possession of a dangerous drug. He will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court tomorrow (September 12).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, the maximum penalty for drug trafficking is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million. The maximum penalty for possession of dangerous drug is imprisonment for 7 years and a fine of $1 million.
