The following is issued on behalf of the Committee on Respect Our Teachers Campaign:

The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, commended teachers for their dedication to nurturing the next generation at the "Salute to Teachers 2013 - Teachers' Day and Commendation Certificate Presentation Ceremony" today (September 10).

Addressing the ceremony, Mr Ng said that the teachers commended are the exemplars of good teachers and believes that they can act as role models to help students develop positive moral values. He also pointed out that teachers' duties are not confined to imparting knowledge in an environment where information available via the Internet is multiplying.

"Instead of using only one-way presentation, many teachers adopt interactive teaching methods to enhance students' interest in learning and cultivate creativity. They help students achieve whole-person development by offering them diversified learning experiences to broaden their horizons, and guiding them towards self-learning and independent thinking," Mr Ng said.

Noting that education reform has been implemented gradually with outstanding achievements in recent years, Mr Ng added, "Hong Kong needs to continue to perform the role of regional education hub in order to internationalise and diversify education services. We also have to consolidate our achievements, and continuously enhance the quality of education to maintain our competitive edge and competitiveness in the international arena.

"We must not forget that behind this success, our teachers are working hard and giving care and guidance to every student, with a view to nurturing a brilliant new generation for society.

"As a partner to the teaching profession, we will fully support teachers in meeting various opportunities and challenges. We will also continue to listen to the views of different stakeholders, so as to stabilise the teaching force and enable education to move steadily forward."

During today's ceremony, more than 1,200 teachers from kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools were presented with commendation certificates under the Teachers' Commendation Scheme, including 114 teachers who were commended five times or more. Under this scheme, kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools may each nominate two teachers who have shown commitment and excellence in teaching. The scheme is in its 18th year, with over 20,000 teachers commended to date.

Today's event was organised by the Committee on Respect Our Teachers Campaign. Also present at the ceremony were the Acting Permanent Secretary for Education, Ms Michelle Li; the Chairman of the Education Commission, Dr Moses Cheng; the Chairperson of the Committee on Professional Development of Teachers and Principals, Dr Carrie Willis; and the Chairman of the Committee on Respect Our Teachers Campaign, Mr Leung Siu-tong.
