Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Hong Kong Buddist Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital (BH) made the following update today (September 6) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients confirmed as carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a medical ward:

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, contact tracing has been performed. Four more male patients (age from 82 to 95 years old) are found to be carrier of VRE today but without clinical symptoms. Among these four patients, one patient has been discharged while the other two patients are still hospitalised, under medical surveillance and isolation with stable condition. One patient passed away on September 5, owing to his underlining illness.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
