The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital made the following update today (September 2) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers in a surgical ward:

In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts has been performed. Four more patients (three male and one female, aged 45 to 59) were confirmed as VRE carriers but without clinical symptoms. One of the patients has passed away due to underlying illness and two of them have been discharged. The remaining patient is still hospitalised under medical surveillance and isolation with stable condition.

The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
