The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Paul Tang, visited the Customs and Excise Department (C&ED) this afternoon (August 30) to better understand the daily operation and services provided by the department.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Raymond Wong, Mr Tang was briefed by the Commissioner of Customs and Excise, Mr Clement Cheung, and the department's directorate staff on its daily operation and latest work.

Mr Tang was introduced to the various aspects of the department's work including combating smuggling and drug-trafficking. He was impressed that the C&ED plays a key role in maintaining Hong Kong's status as an international port and trade centre, acting as a guardian of intellectual property rights, public revenue and consumer interests, while providing valuable services to all walks of life in Hong Kong.

Mr Tang then proceeded to the Syndicate Crimes Investigation Bureau, which was formed this year to enhance the department's capability in tackling syndicate crimes and tracing the proceeds of crime as well as carrying out joint investigation with the Mainland authorities and overseas enforcement agencies.

Lastly, Mr Tang toured the Customs Drug Investigation Bureau of the department which is responsible for conducting in-depth investigations on drug syndicates involved in different levels of drug trafficking activities. The bureau also maintains close co-operation and exchange of intelligence with local, Mainland and overseas law enforcement agencies to combat transnational drug trafficking activities.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Tang chatted with staff representatives from various grades at a tea reception. He greatly appreciated colleagues' dedication and efforts. Facing the ever-increasing work pressure, colleagues have stayed committed to their duties and continued to provide professional and high-quality services to the public.
