Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, to the media after attending the launching ceremony of roving exhibitions on Trade Descriptions (Unfair Trade Practices) (Amendment) Ordinance 2012 today (August 25):
Reporter: (on the amended Trade Descriptions Ordinance)
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development: I think on the Trade Descriptions Ordinance, the amendments have been receiving a wide degree of attention in the public. I want to take this opportunity to thank the media for paying more attention and also going to the community to investigate into possible infringements of the new amendments. I think this is a very healthy development, and all these complaints or enquiries will be followed up duly by the relevant authorities. We are here at a very beginning stage. I think it is very important that we understand that prevention is more important than remedial action, and therefore enhancement of consumer protection in terms of increasing the level of awareness in the public, as well as the business community is the best way forward. We all elevate that level of attention and elevate the level of services. I think the consumers will be there to benefit from these amendments.
Reporter: Are there any further instructions or directions from the Bureau or the authority on the issue of ATV?
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development: As I have just said in Chinese, I have read the report by the Communications Authority. They have duly and objectively followed and investigated this issue. In pursuing Section 24 of the Broadcasting Ordinance, they have issued certain instructions and I hope that ATV will comply with these instructions issued by the Communications Authority to the benefit of the broadcasting community and the Bureau.
