Grants approved for drought and flood victims on the Mainland

     The Government has accepted the advice of the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee and approved two grants from the Disaster Relief Fund totalling $5.482 million to two relief agencies to undertake relief projects for victims of drought and flooding on the Mainland.

     Announcing the grants today (August 23), a Government spokesman said that the Committee hoped the two grants of $1.395 million to Oxfam Hong Kong and $4.087 million to the Amity Foundation, Hong Kong would help provide relief to drought victims in the Yunnan Province and flood victims in Sichuan Province and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region respectively.

     "To ensure that the money will be used for the designated purposes, the two relief agencies will be asked to submit evaluation reports and audited accounts on the use of the grants after the relief projects have been completed," the spokesman said.

     The Committee is chaired by the Chief Secretary for Administration. Members include Mr Cheng Yiu-tong, Ms Starry Lee, Dr Priscilla Leung, Mr Cheung Kwok-che, Mrs Alice Chong, Mr Leo Kung, the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury and the Secretary for Labour and Welfare.
