Exhibition of winning works of the international student visual arts competition opens (with photos)
*********************************************************

Members of the public are invited to visit the International Students' Visual Arts Contest-cum-Exhibition of Hong Kong (HKISAC) - Photography (2013), which is being held from today (August 17) until August 26 at the Exhibition Gallery of the Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Speaking at the exhibition's opening ceremony, the Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim said, "The contest-cum-exhibition not only provides young people with a good platform to develop and express their creativity, multiple ways of seeing and making through visual arts creation and appreciation, but also enables the public to appreciate the essence of different cultures and fosters international communication, mutual respect as well as global harmony."

Mr Ng added that the young artists joining this contest-cum-exhibition had fully demonstrated their creative talents in the arts.

The contest with the theme "My Place - My People", co-organised by the Education Bureau and Po Leung Kuk, aims to encourage young people to express their perceptions and thoughts through photographs, so as to develop their creativity and deepen their artistic thinking. It is also hoped that the international event will promote cross-cultural exchanges and help adults to better understand young people by appreciating their works of art.

On display are about 52 winning entries which have been selected from around 2,800 entries from 41 countries or regions. An artist's statement is attached to each exhibit to provide viewers with more information to appreciate and interpret the artwork.

The contest was open to students studying in grade 4 or above in primary schools, and all grades in secondary schools all over the world. A total of 12 contestants from 10 countries or regions, aged between 11 and 18, were awarded the Hong Kong Grand Prize. These students come from Australia, Mainland China, the Czech Republic, India, Oman, the Philippines, Spain, Taiwan, the United States and Hong Kong. Hong Kong student, Wong Pak-hang, from the Church of Christ in China Mong Man Wai College, was one of the Hong Kong Grand Prize awardees.

The participants' diverse cultural backgrounds yielded a wide variety of styles and messages in the photographic works, especially in the 12 entries awarded the Hong Kong Grand Prize. Among them, Wong Pak-hang depicted parental care through a contrast between a construction site in the city and the passionate interaction of a father and his child.  Also using an urban scene as the background, David Vlach from the Czech Republic captured the simple yet colourful city in his partially black-and-white photograph which expressed his concern for people and place from a different perspective.

The adjudicators of the HKISAC - Photography (2013) included renowned experts in the field of photography, art and art education from around the world.
