The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (August 15) the August 2013 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, two feature articles entitled "Drug Abuse Situation in Hong Kong in 2012" and "Hong Kong's External Trade in High Technology Products and Technology Balance of Payments" are included.
"Drug Abuse Situation in Hong Kong in 2012"
Through the concerted efforts of the government and the community, drug problem in Hong Kong has ameliorated in the past few years. However, the increasingly hidden nature of drug problem has aroused public concern. This feature article gives an overview of the latest situation and some of the changing trends of drug abuse in Hong Kong in recent years by making reference to statistics derived from the Central Registry of Drug Abuse. Moreover, statistics on drug use among students and enforcement of drug offence are presented to supplement the analysis of drug abuse situation, so as to give a wider perspective on the drug abuse problem.

"Hong Kong's External Trade in High Technology Products and Technology Balance of Payments"
Technology is a crucial aspect of economic development and competitiveness of an economy, especially in the context of economic globalisation. Statistics on external trade in high technology products and technology balance of payments are useful for gauging international transfer of technology and know-how as well as reflecting an economy's capability of assimilating technology. This feature article analyses the latest developments in Hong Kong's external trade in high technology products and technology balance of payments.

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing about 140 tables.
