Renowned sand-painting artist Hoi Chiu will lead the All Theatre Art Association (ATAA) with a number of Asian performers to stage the multimedia production "Spiral of Life" in September.
Blending a variety of Asian traditional arts, "Spiral of Life" explores memories before birth and the afterlife. In the spiral of life, do you remember what you forgot? Do you believe you can retain memories when your life ends? Which memory would you keep?
"While watching my daughter grow during the past two years, she reminded me of some forgotten memories I once experienced," said Hoi Chiu. "These kinds of feelings are challenging to express in words, so I've chosen to use sand painting, movement, dance, martial arts, video and masks to share my thoughts about life and death. The original music and live singing will take you to a magical place between worlds."
Directed by Hoi Chiu, the cast of the production includes Maggie Blue O'Hara (singer, dancer and actress), Oxana Banshikova (classical Indian dancer), Nyoman Sura (traditional Balinese dancer), Li Peng (Shaolin martial arts actor), Sheena Cheung (actress) and Bella Star Choy (baby actress).
Founded by Hoi Chiu and Maggie Blue O'Hara in 2004, All Theatre Art Association is known for multimedia productions that blend a contemporary, colourful aesthetic with innovative, ground-breaking and often bilingual storytelling. With their professional skills and expertise, ATAA's members create productions that are diverse, versatile and liberated from the boundaries of conventional theatre. The company has toured internationally, with appearances in the Mainland, Macau, Taiwan, the UK, Singapore, Thailand, Korea and Canada.
"Spiral of Life" is one of the programmes in the "Boundless Multimedia Series" presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be performed at 8pm on September 27 and 28 (Friday and Saturday) and at 4pm on September 29 (Sunday) at the Theatre of the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre. Tickets priced at $140 and $200 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for various booking packages. Please refer to the programme leaflet for discount details. A post-performance talk will be held after the first performance.
To tie in with the production, a workshop (conducted in Cantonese) will be held by the ATAA. It will take place at 3pm on September 28 (Saturday) at the Cultural Activities Hall of the Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre. Audiences aged 6 or above are welcome and the ticket price is $50.
