"Wesendonck Lieder - Wagner's Women" concert to feature songs and readings in December
********************************************************

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth year of Wagner, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present the concert "Wesendonck Lieder - Wagner's Women" in December. The concert will feature songs and readings, and the performers will be soprano Nancy Yuen, pianist Warren Lee and RTHK Radio 4 programme host Jonathan Douglas.

In "Wesendonck Lieder - Wagner's Women", music inspired by three women in Wagner's life will be performed. The programme will include "Wesendonck Lieder", "Liebestod" from "Tristan und Isolde" in Liszt's transcription for piano, a piano transcription of the "Siegfried Idyll" by Glenn Gould, and one of the "Bridal Chorus" piano transcriptions from "Lohengrin".

Three women in particular have been recognised as having exerted an enormous influence in the shaping of Wagner's life as a creative artist. Wagner married two of these women. First was the long-suffering Minna, and then Cosima, Liszt's daughter. Although Mathilde Wesendonck cast a spell during a much briefer period in Wagner's life, this third woman inspired some of the most ravishingly beautiful music ever written.

The concert "Wesendonck Lieder - Wagner's Women" will be staged at 2.30pm, 5.30pm and 8.30pm on December 1 (Sunday) at the Special Exhibition Gallery, Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum. Tickets priced at $220 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
