Cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     A spokesperson for Our Lady of Maryknoll Hospital (OLMH) made the following announcement today (August 3):

     A 86-year-old male patient who had earlier been admitted to a medical ward of OLMH, was confirmed to be a Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carrier on July 26 but without clinical symptoms. In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts has been performed. Three more male in-patients (aged 74 to 97) were confirmed as VRE carriers but without clinical symptoms. Three of them are still hospitalised and under medical surveillance and isolation with stable condition.

     The following enhanced infection control measures here already been adopted:

1. Disinfection and cleansing of the ward concerned have been enhanced;

2. Stringent contact precautions have been applied, including dedicated use of clinical items to VRE carriers, enhanced hand hygiene;

3. All VRE carriers are under surveillance in isolation cohort.

     The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
