Workshops to investigate how to decode dance pieces
***************************************************

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "See, With Mind's Eye - Contemporary Dance Appreciation Workshop" will investigate the nature of dance through interactive activities, video viewing and discussion in September and October. The workshop series will be hosted by Vanessa Cheung, a lecturer in Academic Studies in Dance at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

Dance appreciation basically relates to two main aspects. First, personal aesthetics: What is your sensibility or taste? What are your preferences? Yet personal taste changes with experiences and education. Second, communal aesthetics, i.e. the artistic standards that evolved over time: What is aesthetically sound? Does a certain object have artistic value? How is the work valued according to certain artistic principles of design?

By understanding how dance is put together, we can decode a dance piece. In each are a few basic but essential elements, such as music, spatial relationships and movement qualities. These are the basic tools that we need to appreciate and to understand a dance. This workshop series will actively look into the creative process and venture into the mind of a choreographer.

Vanessa Cheung is an educator and an independent artist. Cheung has worked in different teaching settings, including the Hong Kong Institute of Education, the Hong Kong Ballet's Education and Outreach Unit, City Contemporary Dance Company, the Hong Kong Down Syndrome Association Dance Group, Phillip Wain (Hong Kong) and Body Lab Pilates Studio (Taiwan).

The workshops will be conducted in Cantonese, supplemented with English.
