Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Kwong Wah Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) gave the following update today (July 29) regarding an earlier announcement about a cluster of patients confirmed as carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a surgical ward:

     In accordance with prevailing infection control guidelines, contact tracing has been performed. Seven more male patients, aged 45 to 83, were today confirmed to be carriers of VRE, all without clinical symptoms. Five of the patients are still hospitalised under medical surveillance and in isolation. They are in stable condition. The remaining two patients have been discharged.

     The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
