************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Tung Wah Eastern Hospital (TWEH) made the following update today (July 24) regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of patients confirmed as carriers of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a geriatric ward:

In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, contact tracing has been performed. Three more male in-patients (aged 77 to 89) have been confirmed as VRE carriers, but without clinical symptoms. One of them has been discharged and the remaining patients are now under medical surveillance and in isolation with a stable condition.

The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation in the ward. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health protection for necessary follow-up.
