Case of Legionnaires' disease under CHP investigation

     The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (July 20) investigating a case of Legionnaires' disease (LD) affecting an 89-year-old woman.

     The patient, with underlying illnesses, presented with coughing and shortness of breath since July 18. She attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Mary Hospital on July 18 and was admitted subsequently. The clinical diagnosis was pneumonia and she is currently in a stable condition.

     Her urine sample tested positive for Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 upon laboratory testing.

     The CHP's investigations are proceeding.

     This is the tenth LD case reported to the CHP this year. Twenty-eight cases were filed in 2012, 17 in 2011 and 20 in 2010.
