Police concluded a one-week territory-wide pedestrian safety campaign yesterday (July 9). Through education, publicity and stringent enforcement actions, pedestrians, in particular the elderly, were reminded of the importance of road safety.
A total of 271 verbal warnings and 1 455 summonses were issued to pedestrians failing to comply with road safety regulations during the campaign conducted from July 3 to 9.
During the period, Police issued 1 096 summonses for failing to comply with a light signal on a light signal crossing, 208 summonses for crossing the road within 15 metres of a footbridge/pedestrian subway other than by means of the footbridge/pedestrian subway, 59 summonses for climbing over/through kerbside fence/central reservation on a carriageway, and 44 summonses for crossing within 15 metres of a light signal crossing other than at the crossing.
Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams had distributed about 11 000 publicity leaflets at 254 locations across the territory and appealed to the public to comply with road safety regulations.
"Pedestrians are reminded to take care and to cross the road safely. Those who fail to comply with the law may be liable to a maximum fine of $2,000," a Police spokesman said.
