LegCo to debate motion on facing up to aspirations of people participating in march on July 1
************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The Legislative Council (LegCo) will hold a meeting tomorrow (July 3) at 11am in the Chamber of the LegCo Complex. During the meeting, Members will debate a motion on facing up to the aspirations of the people participating in the march on July 1.

The motion, to be moved by Mr Sin Chung-kai, states: "That this Council urges the Administration to face up to the dissatisfaction with Leung Chun-ying's Government expressed by the people participating in the march on July 1 this year and their relevant aspirations."

Ms Claudia Mo and Mr Christopher Cheung will move separate amendments to Mr Sin Chung-kai's motion.

Mr Ip Kwok-him will move a motion on formulating a population policy. The motion states: "That manpower resources are the cornerstone of Hong Kong's success, but with the average age of the population continuing to rise and the fertility rate fluctuating downwards, Hong Kong has gradually become 'an ageing society with fewer children', and such a trend of demographic change will pose a severe challenge to Hong Kong's sustainable development; in this connection, this Council urges the Government to expeditiously announce a comprehensive population policy, and conduct public consultation on the objectives of the population policy and related recommendations; at the same time, the Government should establish a dedicated population policy implementation framework to facilitate the co-ordination and continuous promotion of the short, medium and long-term population policies, and regularly review the effectiveness of various policies and make timely adjustments to them, so as to address the challenge of demographic change to society."

Dr Kenneth Chan, Mr James To, Ms Claudia Mo, Mr Ip Kin-yuen, Mr Gary Fan, Ms Cyd Ho, Mr Frankie Yick and Mr Kenneth Leung will move separate amendments to Mr Ip Kwok-him's motion. Mr Tommy Cheung will move an amendment to Mr Frankie Yick's amendment.

On Bill, Members will resume Second Reading debate on the Betting Duty (Amendment) Bill 2013. If this Bill is supported by Members and receives its Second Reading, it will go to the Committee Stage and be read the third time.

Meanwhile, Members will also ask the Government 22 questions on various policy areas, six of which require oral replies.

The agenda of the above meeting can be obtained via the LegCo website (www.legco.gov.hk). Please note that the agenda is subject to change, and the latest information about the agenda could be found in the LegCo website.

Members of the public are welcome to observe the proceedings of the meeting from the public galleries of the Chamber of the LegCo Complex.
