Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, after attending the Legislative Council Public Works Subcommittee meeting on the proposed Northeast New Territories and West New Territories landfills extension today (July 2):

Reporter: What are you going to do with the Tseung Kwan O Landfill?

Secretary for the Environment: As mentioned earlier, we have a timetable to implement those improvement measures that we have committed. We would like to monitor the progress and communicate with the local people so that we can understand their response. Within about half to a year's time, we would like to come back to talk about the proposal.

Reporter: What are the improvement measures and how do you ensure that the residents in Tseung Kwan O would support the landfill extension proposal?

Secretary for the Environment: In terms of the improvement proposals, we have issued a letter to the Tseung Kwan O residents which clearly lists out our timetable to address those key concerns, in particular the odour concern, the traffic concern and also the air quality concern. We have already set out a very clear timetable and action plan to respond to the request for local improvements.
