********************************************************

Hong Kong Customs yesterday (June 26) seized 1.4 kilogrammes of cannabis buds and arrested a local man in an anti-narcotics operation in Mong Kok. The market value of the drugs was about $260,000.

Customs officers yesterday evening intercepted a suspicious man in Mong Kok. After searching his reusable shopping bag, officers found a total of 1.4 kilogramme of cannabis buds hidden in five sealed aluminium cans. It is believed that the means of concealment was a way to evade detection by law enforcement officers.

The arrested man, aged 38, claimed to be unemployed. He was charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Kowloon City Magistrates' Court tomorrow (June 28).

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
