Cambridge's Choir of King's College to give two concerts in August
************************************************************

The world-renowned Choir of King's College from Cambridge in the UK will visit Hong Kong again in August for two concerts.

The concerts will take place at 8pm on August 14 (Wednesday) at the Auditorium of Sha Tin Town Hall and at 8pm on August 15 (Thursday) at the Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall. Under the baton of its director of music, Stephen Cleobury, the choir will perform two unique programmes of church music. In the first concert, the choir will perform a range of choral works from the 20th century.

The programme of the second concert will feature traditional works. Local soprano Margaret Yim will join the choir in the concert for Haydn's "Kleine Orgelmesse" and Vivaldi's "Gloria". Members of the Hong Kong Virtuosi will accompany the choir to perform some pieces at the concert as well.

The Choir of King's College owes its existence to King Henry VI, who, in founding the College in 1441, envisaged the daily singing of services in his magnificent chapel, one of the jewels of Britain's cultural and architectural heritage. Every Christmas Eve millions of people worldwide tune into "A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols", a televised service that has been broadcast by the BBC since 1928.

As the pre-eminent representative of the great British church music tradition, the choir regards the singing of the daily services as its raison d'ˆ§tre, and these are an important part of the lives of its 16 choristers, 14 choral scholars and two organ scholars who study in the College itself. While the choir exists primarily to sing the daily services in the King's College Chapel, its worldwide fame and reputation, enhanced by an extensive recording catalogue, has led to invitations to perform around the globe, and to an extensive international tour schedule.

The concerts by the Choir of King's College are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets ranging from $120 to $320 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the group booking package.
