Hong Kong Customs seizes methamphetamine at airport (with photo)
**********************************************************

Customs officers today (June 17) intercepted a foreign female passenger at the Hong Kong International Airport and seized about 2.3 kilogrammes of methamphetamine with an estimated market value of about $1.75 million.

The foreign woman was a transit passenger who arrived at Hong Kong from Johannesburg, South Africa and final destination was Hanoi, Vietnam.  The drugs were concealed inside the false compartment in her checked-in suitcase.  It was believed that the concealment method was used to evade customs officers' detection.

The arrestee, aged 28, claimed to be a businesswoman. She will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court on June 18.

Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is up to life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
