LegCo President concludes visit to UK Parliament (with photos)

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

     The President of the Legislative Council (LegCo), Mr Jasper Tsang, concluded his five-day visit to the Parliament of the United Kingdom (UK), his first overseas duty visit in his capacity of the President of the Fifth LegCo since assuming the office of presidency in October last year.

     During his visit to London, Mr Tsang met with Leader of the House of Commons, Mr Andrew Lansley; Speaker of the House of Commons, Mr John Bercow; and Lord Speaker, Baroness D'Souza, to exchange views on parliamentary developments in recent years. He also met with Chair of the Backbench Business Committee, Ms Natascha Engel, to learn about the operation of the Committee, which was set up in 2010. Mr Tsang also took the opportunity to observe the proceedings of the Prime Minister Question Time.

     In addition, Mr Tsang spoke at the Chatham House and the London School of Economics and Political Science on Hong Kong's road to democracy and universal suffrage in Hong Kong respectively. He also attended a luncheon held by the Hong Kong Association and exchanged views on Hong Kong's latest development with the British political and business leaders who have had long-standing connections with Hong Kong.

     Before concluding his visit on June 14 (London time), Mr Tsang paid a courtesy call on the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the UK, Mr Liu Xiaoming to exchange views on the latest development of Hong Kong and the relationship between China and UK. Mr Tsang also met with representatives of overseas Chinese in England.
