June 2013 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (June 17) the June 2013 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

     In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Container Statistics, 2007 to 2012", "The Profile of Hong Kong Population Analysed by District Council District, 2012" and "Trade between Hong Kong and the Mainland of China" are included.

"Container Statistics, 2007 to 2012"

     The port of Hong Kong is one of the busiest ports in the world. It recorded a container throughput of 23.1 million TEUs in 2012. Laden container movements between Hong Kong and the mainland of China (the Mainland) accounted for 35.7% of the laden container throughput of the port of Hong Kong in 2012. About 69.3% of the laden container movements between Hong Kong and the Mainland were in the Pearl River Delta region. This feature article analyses the container statistics of Hong Kong from 2007 to 2012.

"The Profile of Hong Kong Population Analysed by District Council District, 2012"

     C&SD annually compiles statistics on the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population by District Council district based on data collected from the General Household Survey. This feature article provides an analysis on the profile of the population of Hong Kong for various District Council districts in 2012.

"Trade between Hong Kong and the Mainland of China"

     Hong Kong and the Mainland have maintained a close trading relationship with each other for many years. In the past decade, the Mainland was the Hong Kong's largest destination of re-exports and supplier of imports, on average accounting for 49.8% and 45.7% of Hong Kong's total re-exports and imports respectively. Since 2005, the Mainland had replaced the United States of America to become the largest destination of Hong Kong's domestic exports, accounting for 36.0% on average of total domestic exports over the last decade.

     This feature article analyses the performance and highlights the salient features of trade between Hong Kong and the Mainland during the period from 2003 to 2012.
