SCED promotes HK to US' high-tech sector (with photos)

     The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, continued his trip to the West Coast of the United States (US) on June 13 (San Francisco time), visiting a biotechnology start-up company in San Francisco and the Google headquarters in Silicon Valley, and meeting IT talents and entrepreneurs there.

     Mr So began the second day of his San Francisco programme with a visit to a start-up company that specialises in antimicrobial technology. The company is located on the largest life science campus in San Francisco - Mission Bay. He was briefed by its founder on its experience in technology transfers and realisation of research and development results. Mr So encouraged the company to set up an office in Hong Kong for its China and Asia Pacific markets.

     Afterwards, Mr So proceeded to Silicon Valley and visited Google's headquarters. He held discussions with its executives on Google's business operations in Asia. They also exchanged views on the impact of the Internet as a driver of economic growth and job creation.

     While in Silicon Valley, Mr So also addressed a business luncheon organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, San Francisco. He invited the attending professionals and entrepreneurs to leverage on Hong Kong's advantages to tap into Asian markets. He also elaborated on Hong Kong's future as an intellectual property trading and management centre.

     In the evening, Mr So arrived in Los Angeles for the last leg of his US tour. At a gathering with former Hong Kong residents living there he spoke about Hong Kong's latest developments and encouraged them to seek business and career opportunities in the territory.

     Later Mr So met with renowned US movie director Michael Mann, who is directing a new thriller with location shooting in Hong Kong. Mr So said he was very glad that the movie company had chosen to feature Hong Kong on the big screen and engage Hong Kong artistes in the cast.

     Mr So will continue his visit to Los Angeles on June 14 (Los Angeles time).
